After my years with Arvin Atcal, my father pulled me into his company. This time I did not come as the boy at the QBasic screen. I came as an IT professional who had to learn hydrography properly: how surveys are planned, how depth data is captured on the water, and what clients need from the result.
Together we built IT solutions for the field: tools to capture survey data, process it and turn it into maps that clients could work with. Our clients were very different organisations. Shipping lines needed safe and up-to-date information about ports and channels. Dredging companies needed to know exactly how much material had moved. Fish farms needed to understand the water and the ground below their installations.
Working next to my father, I saw again how much value comes from combining deep knowledge of one field with software. He knew the sea. I knew systems. Neither of us could have built those solutions alone.
This is the model I still use with clients today: they bring the knowledge of their business, we bring the software, and the solution comes from both.
What this chapter taught me
The best software is built by people who know the field and people who know the code, working at the same table.
